Greensand Iron Filters


Greensand iron filters have been used for many years with mixed results. In this method the greensand has a coating of magnesium dioxide that release oxygen into the ions of iron and manganese for conversion. The enlarged ions are then trapped lower in the media bed. As the oxygen becomes depleted, it must be replaced. This is done by flooding the greensand with Potassium Permanganate (purple in color) on a regular basis. The media aridsorb also can be used in place of greensand and has similar results.

Please Note:

Greensand and Aridsorb iron filters are not guaranteed to remove iron bacteria, manganese bacteria, coliform bacteria and E.coli bacteria. The P.H. of the water must be over 7 for proper oxidation. Service flow rates of 5 g.p.m. are a minimum requirement for effective backwashing. The Potassium Permanganate tank must be cleaned periodically for optimum performance. The presence of iron and manganese bacteria could eventually cement the mineral bed together. The presence of coliform and E.coli bacteria could make the media bed ideal for breeding bacteria.
