Literally the same amount of water is present on earth today as when the dinosaurs roamed the planet. Water recycles itself on a daily basis. Water falls to the earth in the form of rain. Some of it soaks into the ground where we pump it out for use.
The vast majority of the rain drains into streams, rivers, and lakes when evaporation takes place and the water is returned to the atmosphere. However, we continue to pollute the water by constantly adding substances to the water that this cycling cannot remove.
On the right is a representation of water problems that we are facing today. These problems can be divided into two categories: natural and man-made.
Water problems that are naturally occurring and capable of being removed by softening the water are shown in yellow. Naturally occurring problems that would require specific filtration equipment are shown in blue. Problems that are man made, usually found in smaller concentrations and are a serious cause of concern in our drinking water are shown in red.
Most of us assume our tap water is pure and clean…but is it?

Why don’t municipalities do a better job of treating our water?
The city does a very good job of treating the water, but they are limited by financial constraints. They do filter, settle, coagulate and disinfect the water with chlorine or chloramine. However, it would not be economical for them to remove all of the impurities because of how we actually use the water they produce.
The cost of treating your water is passed on to the consumer in the form of taxes. And, if the cities were required to remove ALL of the impurities from all of the water they produce, we would be fighting fires, watering lawns and filling swimming pools with very high quality water. This would be a tremendous waste of your tax dollars. It is just not cost effective for the cities to treat their water any more than they currently do because of how the water they produce is utilized.
